SCARLET SINS AS WHITE AS SNOW

The Day of Atonement on the Biblical Calendar is called Yom Kippur in Hebrew, which means the day of covering, cancelling, pardon, and reconciling.

“For it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; and you shall be clean from all your sins before the Lord. It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls: it is a permanent statute” (Leviticus 16:30-31 _NAS).

In Leviticus Chapter 23, this is one of the seven feasts that God calls “My feasts” where the Lord is calls all His people to meet with Him at a particular time in a specific place in order to become betrothed – engaged to be married (Refer to Leviticus 23:2,27-32). The spring feasts speak of the Messiah’s first coming while the fall feasts speak of His second coming. The two winter feasts in the Word of God portray God’s people’s journey to becoming one with their Beloved as His Bride. The Day of Atonement is a Fall Feast; therefore, it is one of the Biblical Bridal Feasts that specifically portray His second coming. However, we need to first understand how Messiah Yeshua fulfilled the Day of Atonement during His first coming before we can flow into the understanding of His second coming.

There are many prophetic pictures in the Day of Atonement. We are going to focus on the special ceremony, which purged defilement from God’s House and His people. The heart of this ceremony in the Old Testament was when the High Priest (Kohen HaGadol) brought a bull and two goats as a special Yom Kippur offering. First, the bull was sacrificed to purge God’s House from any uncanny vibrations, which were caused by the misdeeds of the High Priest himself and his household (Lev. 16:6). Second, one of the goats was chosen by lot to be sacrificed to purge God’s House from any defilement stimulated by the misdeeds of the entire nation (Lev. 16:8-9). Then, the second goat marked for Azazel is sent away to wander in the wilderness (Lev. 16:10).

Before the goat for Azazel is sent out into the wilderness, the High Priest laid both of his hands upon the goat’s head and confessed all the iniquities and transgression of the Israelites; thus, putting all the misdeeds on the goat (Lev. 16:21). Scripture tells us the “the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region” (Leviticus 16:22). Yeshua did this when He died on the Cross as a sin offering during His first coming when Father God laid the sins of the world upon Him (1 John 4:10).

Azazel was commonly seen as a type of satan (Ha satan – of the Satanic Kingdom). During Yom Kippur, Azazel personifies the idea that the people’s sins and their evil consequences were to be sent back to the spirit of desolation and ruin, the source of all impurity. Simply put, Azazel personified wickedness in contrast with the righteous government of YHVH. 

The Book of Enoch confirms this by connecting Azazel to the fall of the angels to Mount Hermon. Azazel is portrayed in the Book of Enoch as the leader of the rebellious giants in the time preceding The Flood. We are told that Azazel taught men the art of warfare – making of swords, knives, shields, and coats of mail – while he taught women the art of deception (seduction) through adorning their bodies, dyeing their hair and painting their faces. Azazel is also credited for teaching the people the secrets of witchcraft, which led them into wickedness and impurity. This was until the Lord commanded the Archangel Raphael to bind him hand and foot to chain him to the rough and jagged rocks of Ha Beth Hadudo where Azazel was to abide until the great Day of Judgment when he will be cast into the fire to be consumed forever (1 Enoch 8:1; 9:6; 10:4-6). The picture of Azazel being sent into the wilderness is understood to be a picture of satan being cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20).

Let us take a closer look at the purging ceremony related to the two goats. The first lot said, “La Adonai” (To the Lord). The second lot said, “La Azazel” (To the scapegoat). The High Priest took the two golden lots – one marked La Adonai and the other Le Azazel – and placed one upon the head of each goat, which sealed its fate. It was considered a good sign if the lot marked La Adonai was drawn by the priest’s right hand; but for 40 years prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD (C.E.), the lot La Adonai was drawn by the priest’s left hand.

Not only was the lot La Adonai was drawn in the priest’s left hand, but there was another significant sign. In the ceremony of the two goats, both goats were considered to be one offering. A crimson sash was tied around the horns of the goat marked Azazel. An interesting tradition arose that is mentioned in the Mishnah. A portion of the crimson sash was attached to the Door of the Temple before the goat was sent into the wilderness. The sash would turn from red to white as the goat met its end. This signaled to the people that God had accepted their sacrifices and their sins were forgiven. “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18 _NASB). For 40 years before the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, the sash stopped turning white. This, of course, is when the Temple Shift happened when Yeshua was slain on the tree. In short, God gave the casting of lots for the two goats ceremony during Yom Kippur to teach us how He will judge the nations of the world prior to the Messianic Age, known as the Millennium, which is His second coming. The nations of the world will be judged as sheep (Adonai) nations or goat (Azazel) nations. The sheep nations will enter the Messianic Kingdom (i.e., the Millennium) as taught in Matthew 25:31-46.

DAVID ANOINTED AS KING

When David was 28 years-old, the Prophet Samuel anointed him as king, which literally ended his pastoral life as a shepherd. David pastoral life had prepared him to become the shepherd of the flock of Israel. The Midrash Samuel 20 relates that in one day David had strangled four lions and three bears that attacked his flock with his bare hands. Can imagine how strong he was?!

When Samuel came to anoint one of Jesse’s sons king, his first thought was the handsome and eldest Eliab was the one; but the holy anointing oil said otherwise. When Samuel attempted to pour oil upon each of David’s brothers in succession, the oil remained in the vessel. The Jewish Encyclopedia tells us that when it came David’s turn, the oil flowed freely and the drops of oil that fell on David’s clothes immediately changed into pearls and diamonds. That would have been so cool to watch. Then to top it all off, when the anointing was finished, the horn was still miraculously full.

This is when David’s mother steps forward revealing her secret. For you see, Jesse and David’s brothers had thought that David was a son of a slave. As with many marriages, Jesse’s martial life had some troubles. As an antidote, Jesse designed to liberate his favorite female slave and marry her. Jesse’s wife found out about Jesse’s design and frustrated it by disguising herself as this slave.  Thus, Jesse unwittingly married his first wife a second time. The result of their union was David who was then passed off as a son of a slave, so Jesse could be left in his error (Yalḳ., Makiri, ed. Buber, ii. 214). The supposed son of a slave – David – was not educated with Jesse’s other sons. He passed his days in the wilderness pasturing sheep where he was tender and loving to his flock.  When David’s mother came forward to reveal her little secret that had been kept so many years, Jesse and David’s brothers learned for the first time that he was not the son of a slave; but a descendant of Miriam, the sister of Moses, just like them.

EMBRACING RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENTS

The Lord’s Feast of Trumpets has many aspects to it. One extremely important facet is the Day of Judgment (Yom HaDin). The Feast of Trumpets is a time of divine judgment and forgiveness. God’s people should always embrace His righteous judgments: “The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether” (Psalms 19:9 _NASB). 

It is easier to embrace His righteous judgments when we understand that “dan” is the Hebrew word for “judge.” Dan’s Ancient Hebrew Word Picture communicates that the Judge is the Door of Life – Yeshua – who has been tempted in every way that we have. “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the Throne of Grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16 _NKJV). 

Therefore, an excellent prayer for the two days of Yom Teruah is to come into alignment with Yeshua with John 16:8 – Holy Spirit convict me and the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

AWAKEN FROM SPIRITUAL SLUMBER

The last ten days of the Season of Repentance on God’s Calendar starts out with the Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah). Repentance is always available; but during this special season known as teshuvah, this grace is more easily accessible in the Spirit. These last ten days of the Season of Repentance are also known as the High Holy Days, or the Days of Awe.

Teshuvah (repentance) speaks to everyone. Those who believe in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) as their Lord and Savior are called to examine their lives and change those areas where they have departed from God. It is a call to examine the plumb line of Scripture to align yourself with the Word of God Himself.

Awakening in Isaiah 51:9 is associated with coming of the Messiah: “Awake, awake, put on the strength, O arm of the LORD; awake as in the days of old, the generations of long ago…” (Isaiah 51:9 _NASB). The arm of the Lord is used as a term for the Messiah in Isaiah 53:1.

The blast of the shofar is a call to awaken. The theme of awakening from sleep is used throughout Scripture (John 11:11; Romans 13:11; Daniel 12:1-2; Psalms 78:65). “Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14 _NAS).

Let us listen to the Hebrew Sage Maimondes’s call to awaken from spiritual slumber, which dovetails with Ephesians 5:14: “Awake, you sleepers, from your sleep! Rouse yourselves, you slumberers, out of your slumber! Examine your deeds, and turn to God in repentance. Remember your Creator, you who are caught up in the daily round, losing sight of eternal truth; you are wasting your years in vain pursuits that neither profit nor save. Look closely at yourselves; improve your ways and your deeds, Abandon your evil ways, your unworthy schemes, every one of you!” (Yad Hichot Teshuva 3.4).

May we all ask God’s spotlight to illuminate the areas that we need to examine and make a turn toward Him.

THE SHEMA AWAKENING BLAST

“How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound [blast of the shofar] …” (Psalms 89:15 NAS).

The Feast of Trumpets (i.e., Yom Teruah) goes for two full days from sundown to sundown. Recall that Yom Teruah is the Day of the Sounding of the Shofar, or the Day of the Awakening Blast; because teruah means “an awakening blast.” The Hebrews focus on Yom Teruah is every person hearing the shofar. This means that the blessing is to hear the shofar being blown, not actually blow it yourself. The blessing is to shema the shofar.

Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad (שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָ‎) is found in Deuteronomy 6:4. In English, it means “Hear, O Israel; the LORD is our God, the LORD is One.” This first verse of the Shema is considered the most essential declaration of faith for the Jews — the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.

It is followed by one line of text that is traditionally recited in an undertone: Baruch shem kavod malchuto l’olam va-ed (בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד). In English, it means Blessed is the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever.

The Shema is said to be the watch word of Israel. It is sung during the Jewish people’s evening and morning prayers. It was also sung when approximately six million Jews were being led to their deaths in the Holocaust. They died with the Shema on their lips.

If you ask a Hebrew (one who has crossed over) what’s the meaning of the Shema, one of the typical answers you will hear is: To Shema is to hear, understand, and do; because after Israel is told to hear the Lord is our God and He is one in Deuteronomy 6:4, the passage that follows goes on by giving understanding on how their faith should be lived: Love God with all your being, teach His commandments to your children, impress His words upon your very heart, etc.

To Shema is to hear, understand, and do. If a person does all three steps, they are considered to KNOW that subject. They have followed the leading of the Lord by hearing Him, seeking to understand the Heavenly Father’s perfect will, and then doing whatever is required (obedience). So, when Psalms 89:15 says, “How blessed are the people who KNOW the joyful sound [blast of the shofar],” it is referring to hearing, understanding, and doing the joyful awakening blast.

“With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout joyfully before the King, the Lord (Psalms 98:6 _NAS).

YOM TERUAH ANNOUNCES THE DAY OF THE LORD

“Blow a trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the Day of the Lord is coming; and surely it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is spread over the mountains, so there is a great and mighty people; there has never been anything like it, nor will there be again after it to the years of many generations” (Joel 2:1-2 _NASB).

We are currently in a special season known as teshuvah – the Season of Repentance. It begins on the first day of the month of Elul and continues for forty days. Thirty days into the Season of Repentance we come to a Biblical Feast that is Yom Teruah – The Feast of Trumpets, or quite literally the Day of the Awakening Blast. Teruah means “an awakening blast.” Technically, this feast doesn’t have a name. Scripture only says that it is the day of blowing the trumpets.

“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation” (Leviticus 23:24 _NASB).

“Now in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall also have a holy convocation: you shall do no laborious work. It will be to you a day for blowing trumpets” (Numbers 29:1 _NASB).

There are many ways the trumpets (shofars) are used in Scripture. Take for example these few samples (not an all-inclusive list):

[1] God’s Word, that His Jewish people call the Torah, was given to Israel with the sound of the shofar (Exodus 19:19).

[2] Israel will be advised of the advent of the Messiah with the sound of the shofar (Zechariah 9:14-16).

[3] The shofar is blown to assemble God’s people for war (Judges 3:27).

 [4] The shofar reminds us that God is sovereign (Psalms 47:5).

 [5] The shofar is a call to repentance (Isaiah 58:1).

[6] The blowing of the shofar ushers in the Day of the Lord (Joel 2:1).

When I sought the Lord about the significance of the Feast of Trumpets in 2020, which according to one calendar starts sundown on September 18, 2020 and ends on nightfall on September 20, God highlighted ushering in the Day of the Lord. When I say “day” in context with the “Day of the Lord,” I personally believe that it is a season with its advent marked by a day of blowing awakening trumpets. By the way, other calendars may differ. The Lord has told a dear friend of mine that all of man’s calendar are off, but He knows the time. I choose to celebrate sundown September 18^th due to the majority of Hebrews celebrating Rosh Ha Shanah on that date. My intention is to provide a bridge. BTW – Rosh Ha Shanah has Babylonian origins. The prophet Joel warns that the Day of the Blast of the Trumpet is a terrible day that sounds the alarm on His holy hill – Zion. Even though both Christians and Jews look forward to this day of deliverance when the Day of the Lord trumpet sounds, many are unaware of the severity of this day of reckoning. Behold, the kindness and severity of God. It will be the best of times and the worst of times.

Everyone will need to keep laser-focused on our Beloved in the coming days, months and years. Pray. Repent. Plead the Blood of Yeshua (Jesus). Spend time in His Presence. Get into the Bible. Learn His Word and live by it. I believe that it will not only be dreadful for those unprepared and the wicked ones, but it will also be a dark and frightening day for the righteous that will causes all to press into Him and hopefully become like Him.

God is a good God. Always has been. Always will be. Don’t forget the good parts of Joel Chapter 2:  “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your  old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. … And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be delivered; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the LORD has said, even among the survivors whom the LORD calls” (Joel 2:28-32 _NASB).

THE FINGER OF GOD

Whenever the term the “finger of God” is used in Scripture, it is referring to the universal language when someone uses their index finger to point something out. Basically, God is pointing to Himself, as He reveals Himself with such clarity that anyone can point out the reality of His Presence.

“When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that You have set in place [I think] ‘What is frail man that You should remember him. And the son of mortal man that You should be mindful of him?’” (Psalms 8:4-5 _Tanach).

“And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man and upon beast. Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he harkened not unto them; as the LORD had said” (Exodus 8:18-19 _KJV).

“But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: ‘Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I cast out demons by Beelzebub. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the Kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:17-20 _NKJV).

Behold, the world is about to experience the finger of God like never before. Turn in repentance to the One pointing out the reality of His awe-inspiring presence.

RESTING PLACE IN HIS LUXURIOUS LOVE

“The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd, I always have more than enough. He offers a resting place for me in His luxurious love. His tracks take me to an oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss” (Psalms 23:1-2 TPT).

Don’t you just love this Psalms 23 snippet from The Passion Translation?

The most common Hebrew word for “shepherd” is taken from the root word ra-ah, which also means “best friend.” Shepherds don’t just have a relationship with anyone. A shepherd is focused on His own flock(s). His sheep recognize no other shepherd. When the Shepherd calls, His sheep are quick to pay attention and they come running to Him. The sheep of His pasture relate to Him, like they do with their very best friend. It is a pleasurable, easy, and loving two-way path of righteousness.

The phrase “His luxurious love” implies that His love is the finest and richest kind of abundant, unconditional love that flows with great ease and comfort. The Greek Word for unconditional love is agape, which merges two words. Ago means “to lead, like a shepherd,” and pao means “to rest.” Love is the Great Shepherd of our souls leading us to the place of true rest in His perfect and pure heart.

The one who dwells in an ascended place of rest is far above the madness of this fallen world. “He offers a resting place for me in His luxurious love” (Psalms 23:2 TPT).

“He who abides in the secret place of the Most High will dwell in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalms 91:1). “Most High” is God’s Name El Elyon, which comes the Hebrew root that means “to ascend.” When you and I habitually rest in the secret of Elyon – The Ascended One – we are concealed by His all-sufficient, all-knowing, and unlimited love. This is our “oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss” (Psalms 23:2 TPT).
