Today marks The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) on the Biblical Calendar. In Hebrew, Yom Kippur means the day of covering, cancelling, pardon, and reconciling.
“For it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; and you shall be clean from all your sins before the Lord. It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls: it is a permanent statute” (Leviticus 16:30-31 NAS).
In Leviticus Chapter 23, this is one of the seven feasts that God calls “My feasts” where the Lord is calls all His people to meet with Him at a particular time in a specific place in order to become betrothed – engaged to be married (Refer to Leviticus 23:2,27-32). The spring feasts speak of the Messiah’s first coming while the fall feasts speak of His second coming. The two winter feasts in the Word of God portray God’s people’s journey to becoming one with their Beloved as His Bride. The Day of Atonement is a Fall Feast; therefore, it is one of the Biblical Bridal Feasts that specifically portray His second coming. However, we need to first understand how Messiah Yeshua fulfilled the Day of Atonement during His first coming before we can flow into the understanding of His second coming.
There are many prophetic pictures in the Day of Atonement. We are going to focus on the special ceremony, which purged defilement from God’s House and His people. The heart of this ceremony in the Old Testament was when the High Priest (Kohen HaGadol) brought a bull and two goats as a special Yom Kippur offering. First, the bull was sacrificed to purge God’s House from any uncanny vibrations, which were caused by the misdeeds of the High Priest himself and his household (Lev. 16:6). Second, one of the goats was chosen by lot to be sacrificed to purge God’s House from any defilement stimulated by the misdeeds of the entire nation (Lev. 16:8-9). Then, the second goat marked for Azazel is sent away to wander in the wilderness (Lev. 16:10).
Before the goat for Azazel is sent out into the wilderness, the High Priest laid both of his hands upon the goat’s head and confessed all the iniquities and transgression of the Israelites; thus, putting all the misdeeds on the goat (Lev. 16:21). Scripture tells us the “the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region” (Leviticus 16:22). Yeshua did this when He died on the Cross as a sin offering during His first coming when Father God laid the sins of the world upon Him (1 John 4:10).
Azazel was commonly seen as a type of satan (Ha satan – of the Satanic Kingdom). During Yom Kippur, Azazel personifies the idea that the people’s sins and their evil consequences were to be sent back to the spirit of desolation and ruin, the source of all impurity. Simply put, Azazel personified wickedness in contrast with the righteous government of YHVH.
The Book of Enoch confirms this by connecting Azazel to the fall of the angels to Mount Hermon. Azazel is portrayed in the Book of Enoch as the leader of the rebellious giants in the time preceding The Flood. We are told that Azazel taught men the art of warfare – making of swords, knives, shields, and coats of mail – while he taught women the art of deception (seduction) through adorning their bodies, dyeing their hair and painting their faces. Azazel is also credited for teaching the people the secrets of witchcraft, which led them into wickedness and impurity. This was until the Lord commanded the Archangel Raphael to bind him hand and foot to chain him to the rough and jagged rocks of Ha Beth Hadudo where Azazel was to abide until the great Day of Judgment when he will be cast into the fire to be consumed forever (1 Enoch 8:1; 9:6; 10:4-6). The picture of Azazel being sent into the wilderness is understood to be a picture of satan being cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20).
Let us take a closer look at the purging ceremony related to the two goats. The first lot said, “La Adonai” (To the Lord). The second lot said, “La Azazel” (To the scapegoat). The High Priest took the two golden lots – one marked La Adonai and the other Le Azazel – and placed one upon the head of each goat, which sealed its fate. It was considered a good sign if the lot marked La Adonai was drawn by the priest’s right hand; but for 40 years prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD (C.E.), the lot La Adonai was drawn by the priest’s left hand.
Not only was the lot La Adonai was drawn in the priest’s left hand, but there was another significant sign. In the ceremony of the two goats, both goats were considered to be one offering. A crimson sash was tied around the horns of the goat marked Azazel. An interesting tradition arose that is mentioned in the Mishnah. A portion of the crimson sash was attached to the Door of the Temple before the goat was sent into the wilderness. The sash would turn from red to white as the goat met its end. This signaled to the people that God had accepted their sacrifices and their sins were forgiven. “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool: (Isaiah 1:18 NASB). For 40 years before the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, the sash stopped turning white. This, of course, is when the Temple Shift happened when Yeshua was slain on the tree. In short, God gave the casting of lots for the two goats ceremony during Yom Kippur to teach us how He will judge the nations of the world prior to the Messianic Age, known as the Millennium, which is His second coming. The nations of the world will be judged as sheep (Adonai) nations or goat (Azazel) nations. The sheep nations will enter the Messianic Kingdom (i.e., the Millennium) as taught in Matthew 25:31-46.
