As we gaze at repentance (teshuvah) through the lens of the Living Hebrew Letters, we understand that the third letter of the Hebrew Alphabet – GIMEL – is connected to kindness. Kindness is one of the eternal fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Michael L. Munk shares: “Kindness not only elevates people to heavenly levels; it even leaves its mark upon the place where it is performed.”
Scripture has this to say about kindness:
“God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the EXCEEDING RICHES OF HIS GRACE IN HIS KINDNESS TOWARD US IN CHRIST JESUS” (Ephesians 2:4-7 NKJV).
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, PUT ON tender mercies, KINDNESS, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:12-14 NKJV).
“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or DO YOU SHOW CONTEMPT FOR THE RICHES OF HIS KINDNESS, forbearance and patience, not realizing that GOD’S KINDNESS IS INTENDED TO LEAD YOU TO REPENTANCE? But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done” (Romans 2:1-6 NIV).
The eternal fruit of kindness is connected to forgiving one another as well as first looking at oneself when passing judgment on another person. Matthew 7:3 speaks of this concept as taking the plank out of your own eye first before even attempting to take a speck out of your brother’s eye. Due to God’s incredible kindness, long-suffering forbearance and patience, we tend to think that He is okay with the sin that so easily entangles us. Not only is He not okay with it, but being presumptuous about His kindness is an act of contempt on our part.
During these days of repentance, I leave you simply with another version of Romans 2 as food for thought. May we all look at ourselves first before we point the finger at others:
GOD IS KIND, BUT NOT SOFT
(Romans 2:1-8 from The Message)
“Those people are on a dark spiral downward. But if you think that leaves you on the high ground where you can point your finger at others, think again. Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. It takes one to know one. Judgmental criticism of others is a well-known way of escaping detection in your own crimes and misdemeanors. But God isn’t so easily diverted. He sees right through all such smoke screens and holds you to what you’ve done. You didn’t think, did you, that just by pointing your finger at others you would distract God from seeing all your misdoings and from coming down on you hard? Or did you think that because he’s such a nice God, he’d let you off the hook? Better think this one through from the beginning. God is kind, but he’s not soft. IN KINDNESS HE TAKES US FIRMLY BY THE HAND AND LEADS US INTO A RADICAL LIFE-CHANGE. You’re not getting by with anything. Every refusal and avoidance of God adds fuel to the fire. The day is coming when it’s going to blaze hot and high, God’s fiery and righteous judgment. Make no mistake: In the end you get what’s coming to you — Real Life for those who work on God’s side, but to those who insist on getting their own way and take the path of least resistance, Fire!”
Humbling ourselves under the mighty hand of God,
Give em heaven!!!
