Glory is heavy with every good while grief is heavy with every evil.
The Lord taught me this when he delivered me from a spirit of grief twenty years ago. At the time, I was clueless. I did not know that I had a problem with grief, because I had for the most part shut down emotionally for years. I had self-protected through aloofness… through checking out and seeming indifference. It all stemmed from a tragic event that I had witnessed firsthand when I was two years old, which caused acute mental and emotional distress, or in a word “grief.” Through this journey, I learned that people are supposed to grieve when it is appropriate; but we are not to dwell there. We are not to take up residence with grief. In fact, prolonged grief will inhibit many things: experiencing God’s glory; affecting one’s mental, emotional, and physical health; etc.
Right now, it’s super-duper important to come out of agreement with any grief that is continually weighing you down due to the grievous and cataclysmic happenings in these last days. If you don’t know if you have continual grief – a spirit of grief – simply ask the Lord. We will certainly grieve over devastating situations; but we must not dwell in the place that is heavy with every evil. Believers are to focus on the Author and Perfecter of our faith – our glorious Lord and Savior Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) – and our most precious and loving Heavenly Father. They are our home. They are the place that is heavy with every good. “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV).
To assist in your quest to shed any remnants of grief, I am sharing the Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (10th Edition) definitions and a couple Scriptures that the Lord used to help deliver me from a spirit of grief through my own confession and repentance.
GRIEF – 1 obs: GRIEVANCE 2a: deep and poignant distress caused by or as if by bereavement. 2b: a cause of such suffering. 3a: an unfortunate outcome: DISASTER – used chiefly in the phrase “come to grief” 3b: MISHAP, MISADVENTURE 3c: TROUBLE, ANNOYANCE. syn SORROW.
GRIEVANCE – 1 obs: SUFFERING, DISTRESS 2: a cause of distress (as an unsatisfactory working condition) felt to afford reason for complaint or resistance. 3: the formal expression of a grievance: COMPLAINT
COMPLAINT – 1: expression of grief, pain, or dissatisfaction. 2a: something that is the cause or subject of protest or outcry. 2b: a bodily ailment or disease. 3: a formal allegation against a party.
DISASTER – 1: a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or destruction; broadly: a sudden or great misfortune or failure.
TROUBLE – 1a: to agitate mentally or spiritually: WORRY, DISTURB. 1b (1) archaic: MISTREAT, OPPRESS. 1b (2): to produce physical disorder in: AFFLICT <troubled by a cold> 1c: to put to exertion or inconvenience. 2: to put into confused motion ~vi 1: to become mentally agitated: WORRY. 2: to make an effort: be at pains. ~noun 1: public unrest or disturbance. 2: a state or condition of distress, annoyance or difficulty: as 2a: a condition of physical distress or ill health: AILMENT. 2b: a condition of mechanical malfunction 2c: a condition of doing something badly or only with great difficulty. 3: a negative feature: DRAWBACK.
ANNOYANCE – 1: the act of annoying or being annoyed. 2: the state or feeling of being annoyed: VEXATION. 3: a source of vexation or irritation: NUISANCE.
ANNOY – 1: to disturb or irritate esp. by repeated acts. 2: to harass esp. by quick brief attacks ~vi : to cause annoyance. syn ANNOY, VEX, IRK, BOTHER means to upset a person’s composure. ANNOY implies a wearing on the nerves by persistent petty unpleasantness. VEX implies greater provocation and stronger disturbance and usually connotes anger but sometimes perplexity or anxiety. IRK stresses difficulty in enduring and the resulting weariness or impatience of spirit. BOTHER suggests interference with comfort or peace of mind.
WORRY – 1 British: CHOKE, STRANGLE. 2a: to harass by tearing, biting or snapping esp. at the throat 2b: to shake or pull at with teeth. 2c: to touch or disturb something repeatedly. 2d: to change the position of or adjust by repeated pushing or hauling. 3: to assail with rough or aggressive attack or treatment: TORMENT. 4: to afflict with mental distress or agitation: make anxious. ~vi: 1: to move, proceed or progress by unceasing or difficult effort: STRUGGLE. 2: to feel or experience concern or anxiety: FRET.
MISTREAT – to treat badly: ABUSE.
ABUSE – 1: a corrupt practice or custom. 2: improper or excessive use or treatment. 3 obs: a deceitful act: DECEPTION. 4: language that condemns or vilifies usually unjustly, intemperately, and angrily. 5: physical maltreatment.
DECEPTION – 1a: the act of deceiving. 1b: the fact or condition of being deceived. 2: something that deceives: TRICK. syn DECEPTION, FRAUD, DOUBLE-DEALING, SUBTERFUGE, TRICKERY.
DECIEVE – ~vt 1 archaic: ENSNARE. 2a obs: to be false to. 2b archaic: to fail to fulfill. 3 obs: CHEAT. 4: to cause to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. ~vi : to give a false impression. syn DECEIVE, MISLEAD, DELUDE, BEGUILE.
OPPRESS – 1a archaic: SUPPRESS. 1b: to crush or burden by abuse of power or authority. 2: to burden spiritually or mentally: weigh heavily upon. syn WRONG.
SUPPRESS – 1: to put down by authority or force: SUBDUE. 2: to keep from public knowledge as 2a: to keep secret. 2b: to stop or prohibit the publication or revelation of. 3a: to exclude from consciousness. 3b: to keep from giving vent to: CHECK. 4 obs : to press down. 5: to restrain from a usual course of action: ARREST.
BURDEN – 1a: something that is carried: LOAD. 1b: DUTY, RESPONSIBILITY. 2: something oppressive or worrisome. 3: a bearing of a load. 4: the amount of a deleterious parasite, growth or substance present in a human or animal body.
WRONG – 1a: an injurious, unfair, or unjust act: action or conduct inflicting harm without due provocation or just cause. 1b: a violation or invasion of the legal rights of another; esp. TORT. 2: something wrong, immoral, or unethical; esp. principles, practices, or conduct contrary to justice, goodness, equity, or law. 3: the state, position, or fact of being or doing wrong as 3a: the state of being mistaken or incorrect. 3b: the state of being guilty. syn INJUSTICE.
AFFLICT – 1 obs a: HUMBLE. 1b: OVERTHROW. 2a: to distress so severely as to cause persistent suffering or anguish. 2b: TROUBLE, INJURE. syn AFFLICT, TRY, TORMENT, TORTURE, RACK. AFFLICT is a general term and applies to the causing of pain or suffering or of acute annoyance, embarrassment, or any distress. TRY suggests imposing something that strains the powers of endurance or of self-control. TORMENT suggests persecution or the repeated inflicting of suffering or annoyance. TORTURE adds the implication of causing unbearable pain or suffering. RACK stresses straining or wrenching.
TORMENT – 1: the infliction of torture (as by a rack or wheel). 2: extreme pain or anguish of body or mind: AGONY. 3: a source of vexation or pain. 4: DISTORT, TWIST. syn AFFLICT.
DISTRESS – 1a: pain or suffering affecting the body or the mind: TROUBLE. 1b: a painful situation: MISFORTUNE. 2a: a state of danger or desperate need, syn SUFFERING, MISERY, AGONY. 3: to subject to great strain or difficulties. 4 archaic: to force or overcome by inflicting pain. 5: to cause to worry or be troubled: UPSET. 6: to mar (as clothing or wood) deliberating to give an effect of age.
SUFFERING (SUFFER) – 1a: to submit to or be forced to endure. 1b: to feel keenly: labor under. 2: UNDERGO, EXPERIENCE. 3: to put up with esp. as inevitable or unavoidable. 4: to allow esp. by reason of indifference. ~vt: 1: to endure death, pain, or distress. 2: to sustain loss or damage. 3: to be subject to disability or handicap. syn BEAR.
PAIN – 1: PUNISHMENT. 2a: usually localized physical suffering associated with bodily disorder (as a disease or injury); also: a basic bodily sensation induced by a noxious stimulus received by naked nerve endings, characterized by physical discomfort (as pricking, throbbing, or aching), and typically leading to evasive action. 2b: acute mental or emotional distress or suffering: GRIEF.
SORROW – 1a: deep distress, sadness, or regret esp. for the loss of someone or something loved. 2: a cause of grief or sadness. 3: a display of grief or sadness, syn SORROW, GRIEF, ANGUISH, WOE, REGRET mean distress of mind. SORROW implies a sense of loss or a sense of guilt and remorse. GRIEF implies poignant sorrow for an immediate cause. ANGUISH suggests torturing grief or dread. WOE is deep or inconsolable grief or misery. REGRET implies pain caused by deep disappointment, fruitless longing, or unavailing remorse.
PSALMS 31 – “Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body too. For my life is spent with sorrow And my years with sighing; My strength has failed because of my guilt, And my body has wasted away. Because of all my adversaries, I have become a disgrace, Especially to my neighbors, And an object of dread to my acquaintances; Those who see me in the street flee from me. I am forgotten like a dead person, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. For I have heard theslander of many, Terror is on every side; While they took counsel together against me, They schemed to take away my life. But as for me, I trust in You, Lord, I say, ‘You are my God’” (Psalms 31:9-14 NASB).
ISAIAH 53 – “He was despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and pain and acquainted with grief; And like One from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or esteem Him. But [in fact] He has borne our griefs, And He has carried our sorrows and pains; Yet we [ignorantly] assumed that He was stricken, Struck down by God and degraded and humiliated [by Him]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; The punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, And by His stripes (wounds) we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, We have turned, each one, to his own way; But the Lord has caused the wickedness of us all [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing] To fall on Him [instead of us]. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth [to complain or defend Himself]; Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before her shearers, So He did not open His mouth. After oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation [His contemporaries], who [among them] concerned himself with the fact That He was cut off from the land of the living [by His death] For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke [of death] was due? His grave was assigned with the wicked, But He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. Yet the Lord was willing To crush Him, causing Him to suffer; If He would give Himself as a guilt offering [an atonement for sin], He shall see His [spiritual] offspring, He shall prolong His days, And the will (good pleasure) of the Lord shall succeed and prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He shall see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge [of what He has accomplished] the Righteous One, My Servant, shall justify the many [making them righteous—upright before God, in right standing with Him], For He shall bear [the responsibility for] their sins. Therefore, I will divide and give Him a portion with the great [kings and rulers], And He shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because He [willingly] poured out His life to death, And was counted among the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore and took away the sin of many, And interceded [with the Father] for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:3-12 AMP).
Be encouraged. A dear friend of mine just got free from persistent grief that was affecting her mental and physical health. The Lord showed her that the root of her grief was while she was in the womb her mother had been grieving the death of her own father.
May the Father of Glory give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Eph. 1:17). And may you be blessed, as you are being transformed into the image of the glory of the Lord (2 Cor. 3:18).
