Every year the Days of Awe begins with Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets) and ends with Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The Days of Awe (yamim nora’im) are the final ten days of the annual forty-day Season of Repentance; thus, they are known as Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (עֲשֶׂרֶת יְמֵי תְּשׁוּבָה) – the Ten Days of Repentance.
What I find so interesting is that the Feast of Trumpets is also called the Day of Judgment – Yom Ha Din (יוֹם הַדִּין) – while Yom Kippur is called the Day of Mercies – Yom Ha Rachamim (יוֹם הָרַחֲמִים).
During the Day of Judgment, we rejoice with each other and celebrate the King of Kings. We eat special foods, and we listen to God’s Trumpet – His clarion call. A clarion call is a clear and shrill cry from His battle trumpet. It’s a call to action to war from His place of rest.
We don’t approach the Judge during His Day of Judgement; but our One True God and King, as His royal children. This may seem counterintuitive until one examines and understands the Hebrew Word Picture for the word “judge” – dan (דָּן). The Hebrew Living Letter combination of DALET-NUN communicates that when we see the judge, we see the Door of Life – Yeshua (Jesus). Therefore, when the Judge of all the earth is summoned, we must first realize that Messiah Yeshua took upon Himself our judgment through the Cross, so we can find and receive His infinite mercy and help in time of need: “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16 NKJV).
Seated upon the Throne of Grace is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords whose robe is dipped in blood and His Name is the Word of God. We can either obey the author of eternal salvation (Hebrew 5:8-10), or we can be ruled by His rod of iron (Revelation 19:11-16). It is our choice.
Yom Kippur is not only called the Day of Mercies, but it is known as holiest day of the year – Yom ha Kodesh (יוֹם הַקָּדוֹשׁ). No wonder that it’s the climax of the 40-day Season of Repentance (teshuvah). “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy” (Psalms 33:18 NKJV).
Most Bible-believing Jews celebrate the Day of Atonement starting at sundown September 15 through sundown September 16, 2021. I choose to join them on this day to act as a bridge for the One New Man in Christ (Messiah) in the Spirit. Therefore, on this holiest Day of Mercies, let us remember the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy prayer that God taught Moses with our focus on the author and perfecter of our faith. Let us remember His tender mercies and loving kindness, as it is written: “To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in You; Let me not be ashamed; Let not my enemies triumph over me. Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause. Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day. REMEMBER, O LORD, YOUR TENDER MERCIES AND YOUR LOVINGKINDNESSES, FOR THEY ARE FROM OF OLD. Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; ACCORDING TO YOUR MERCY REMEMBER ME, FOR YOUR GOODNESS SAKE, O LORD. Good and upright is the Lord; Therefore He teaches sinners in the way. The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way. ALL THE PATHS OF THE LORD ARE MERCY AND TRUTH, TO SUCH AS KEEP HIS COVENANT AND HIS TESTIMONIES” (Psalms 25:1-10 NKJV).
Always remember that the righteous kings and priest made after the Order of Melchizedek trust in the Lord Most High and it is through His mercies that we will not be moved (Psalms 21:7). Therefore, let us sing of the power and mercy of our Strength. Let us praise our Refuge in the day of trouble. Let us give our Stronghold – the God of Mercy – all the glory due His Name.
Please recall that YHVH’s mercy was disclosed through His Names after the fateful sin of the Golden Calf (Exodus 34:6-7). These Thirteen Attributes of God’s Mercy foretold of the Merciful One’s once-for-all sacrifice on the Cross. Just as the second set of tablets (cubes) took the place of the shattered ones, so is Messiah Yeshua the manifestation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy (middot rachamim). It is through our glorious Messiah that “mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed” (Psalms 85:10 NKJV).
“Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way” (Psalms 2:12). Embrace His discipline. Serve the LORD with fear. Rejoice with trembling. Blessed are all who trust His truth. His mercy and His lovingkindness, which are better than life. And, may you meet Him face-to-face and may you be written in the Book of Life!
