The last day of Passover (Pesach) is the eighth day. It is known as Yom Ha’atzma’ut – the day of independence. It is the day when God’s people look to the hope of the future for a better world. It commemorates the era of the Messiah.
Many Jewish people worldwide celebrate the fading hours of Passover with a meal called Moshiach’s Meal in which the Book of Isaiah is read, specifically prophecies about the Messiah: “ 1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist. 6 ‘The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. … 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:1-6,9).
Many Bible-believing Jewish folks are looking for the first coming of the Messiah while followers of The Way are looking for His second coming. Messiah Yeshua proclaimed after His 40-day temptation in the desert that He fulfilled Isaiah 11 as well as Isaiah 61 in Luke 4: “16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’ 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing’” (Luke 4:16-20).
The Bible originally commands God’s people to celebrate Passover for seven days. When the Jewish people were exiled, the exact date to celebrate Passover was in question. To solve the problem, the Hebrew Sages added an extra day. Thus, the eighth day of Passover changed an ordinary day into a holy one. This is like what will happen when the Messiah comes to transform all of creation. Therefore, the Messiah’s Meal or Moshiach’s Seudah on the eighth day of Passover anticipates the redemption/restoration of all things: “18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:18-21).
One of the biggest keys to the restoration of all things comes through the transformation of a person’s soul. When we gaze at a person’s soul work through the lens of Passover, we behold one of the Hebrew words for Egypt – Mitzrayim – which means “boundaries” and “constrictions.” Therefore, yetziat mitzrayim (going out of Egypt) is all about rising above everything that inhibits the soul of mankind from being free in the Messiah (in Christ).
