Each iota of the Word of God has an application for the past, present and future: “I am Alpha and Tav, the beginning and the ending says the Lord God who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8 Aramaic).
Even the Book of Revelation is about the past, present and future. During the author’s own time (i.e., the Apostle John), the six trumpets that mark the various stages of the battle against Rome in the War Scroll mark the stages of Israel’s involvement with Rome since Pompey entered Jerusalem in 63 BCE and defiled The Temple. According to this application of the Book of Revelation, the sixth trumpet was when Rome invaded the Jews homeland in 66 CE. The faithful were waiting for the seventh and last trumpet to herald the Kingdom.
This is an important context for the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Qumran community were literally preparing for the final battle against incarnate evil of their day – Rome. The War Scroll section of the Dead Sea Scrolls present the Essenes’ apocalyptic vision of the final battle between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness.
In the Book of Revelation, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords rides out of heaven on a white horse followed by a heavenly host on white horses too. We see them fighting against the beast and the false prophet and their followers (Revelation 19:11-16). Both the Qumran Community (i.e., Essenes) and the first converts to The Way (i.e., Christians) were confident that the King of Glory and His Heavenly Host were ready to help them in their darkest hour.
