Q: What do you mean when you use the word “mystic?”
A: I take my view of the concept of “mystic” from Scripture, and the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (10th Edition).
The word “mystic” comes from the Latin “mysticus,” which means “of mysteries.” A mystery is a religious truth that one can know only by revelation and cannot fully understand. A mystic relates to the mysterious, has a feeling of awe or wonder, and is a follower of the mystical way of life. A mystical way of life is having a spiritual meaning of reality. It involves having direct communion with God or ultimate reality. Mysticism is the belief that direct knowledge of God, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality can be attained through experience.
According to Dr. Elizabeth Alvilda Petroff, mysticism has been called “the science of the love of God,” and “the life which aims at union with God.” It’s emphasis is on the spiritual life as a progressive climb — sometimes a steep and arduous one.
I investigated the words “mystery” and “mysteries in Scripture right after the LORD told me: “The reign of My Kingdom has begun” on September 16, 2012 (Yom Teruah). It started with seeing a gorgeous black “Horse of Mysteries” in the spirit. This horse looked like a Friesian. It was strong and graceful, but very intricate… complex. This mysterious horse represents the hidden darkness of the mysteries of Christ and the Father as revealed by the Seven Spirits of God.
The “Horse of Mysteries” had black course hair that hung in its eyes, and when the wind blew it could see. Its ears were erect and alert. Its coat wasn’t hair, but resembled a very dense cloud. It spoke of the secrets of where the Father is. The “Horse of Mysteries” unravels the mysteries of the Word of God. It opens its mouth and out comes the testimony of the Lord.
I found 21 general contexts in Scripture for “mystery” and “mysteries.” The following are a few of my favorite:
• It’s been given to Christ’s disciples to know the MYSTERIES of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 13:11), and MYSTERIES of the Kingdom of God (Luke 8:10).• God’s people are called stewards of the MYSTERIES of God (1 Cor inthians4:1).
• We speak the wisdom of God by the Spirit of God in a MYSTERY among them that are perfect (1 Corinthians 2:7).
• There is the fellowship of the MYSTERY between Messiah Yeshua and His Church according to the eternal purposes in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:9).
• We are to make manifest the MYSTERY OF CHRIST in word and deed (Colossians 4:3).
• There is a great MYSTERY concerning Christ and the Church being one flesh… of Christ loving the church so much that He gave Himself for it to sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water of the word (Ephesians 5:26).
• We are to hold onto the MYSTERY of faith to be proven and found blameless (1 Timothy 3:9).
You get the idea. The antidote to the “Mystery of Iniquity” (1 Thessalonians 2:7), “Mystery Babylon” (Revelation 17:5), and the “mystery of the woman and the beast” (Revelation 17:7) are literally found in the MYSTERIES OF GOD THE FATHER and OF CHRIST, so let’s redeem the Mystic. The Order of Melchizedek restores all things that can be redeemed. Having direct communion with God and His ultimate reality through experience is not only redeemable, it’s divine and sublime. Next time you hear the word “mystic” think of knowing the love of God, and displaying this unlimited, exquisite mystery for all to see.
