INTERSECTION OF THE FEAST OF FIRST FRUITS AND THE MESSIAH’S RESURRECTION

Barley Sheaf - Yom Ha Bikkirum

Today, there is a one in seven chance that that the Feast of First Fruits (i.e., Bikkurim) lands on the exact same day that Jesus Christ actually rose from he dead — the 17th of Nisan.

A friend messaged me and told me that he was still confused about the Feast of First Fruits (Bikkurim). I don’t blame him. It is not the most straight forward concept.

Scriptures that specifically speak about the celebration of the Feast of First Fruits are in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 26:

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land which I am going to give to you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring in the sheaf of the FIRST FRUITS of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the LORD for you to be accepted; ONE THE DAY AFTER THE SABBATH the priest shall wave it. … It is to be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places” (Leviticus 23:9-14 NASB).

“And it shall be, when you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, that you shall TAKE SOME OF THE FIRST OF ALL THE PRODUCE of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and PUT IT IN A BASKET AND GO TO THE PLACE WHERE THE LORD YOUR GOD CHOOSES TO MAKE HIS NAME ABIDE” (Deuteronomy 26:1-2 NKJV).

We know the timing of the Feast of First Fruits from Leviticus 23:11 is “on the day after the Sabbath.” We also know the Sabbath (i.e., seventh day) that the Lord is talking about is calculated from the previous section Leviticus 23:4-8. It’s the Sabbath which follow the Feast of the Lord called Passover (Pesach). This “day after the Sabbath” falls sometime during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

What can be confusing is that the actual day that Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) raised from the dead has been documented to be the 17th of Nisan, and the year He was crucified the 17th of Nisan was also the Feast of First Fruits. To calculate Yeshua resurrection properly we need to count that Yeshua had to be in the ground 3 complete days and 3 complete nights (Matthew 12:40) as foretold in Jonah.

“Now Messiah has been raised from the dead, the First Fruit of those who sleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20).

Know that Passover is a set date that always falls on the 14th of Nisan. The Feast of Unleavened Bread is also a set time that runs from the 15th – 21st of Nisan. And the Feast of First Fruit in any given year is always the day that follows the 7th day sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Biblical Calendar differs quite a bit from our present-day Gregorian Calendar. By the way, many people just include the Feast of Unleavened Bread with Passover and simply say that Passover is an 8-day festival.

Since Passover (14th of Nisan) can be any day of the week (Sunday-Saturday), we have seven possibilities for how Passover, the Feast of First Fruit, and the date of the Messiah’s actual resurrection can happen in any given year. Please remember that the Feast of Unleavened Bread is a 7-day feast and the Feast of First Fruits is the day that follows the Passover Sabbath in our calculations:

[1] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) started at sundown on Monday (like this year), the Feast of First Fruit starts at sundown the following Saturday and goes through sundown on Sunday, but the actual day that marks His resurrection is still the 17th of Nisan, which began sundown on Thursday (04-17-14) this year.

[2] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Tuesday, the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown the following Saturday and goes through sundown on Sunday, but the actual day that marks His resurrection is still the 17th of Nisan, which would begin sundown on Friday that year.

[3] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Wednesday, the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown the following Saturday and goes through sundown on Sunday. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME WHEN THE FEAST OF FIRST FRUITS COINCIDES WITH THE ACTUAL DAY THAT MARKS HIS RESURRECTION — THE 17TH OF NISAN.

[4] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Thursday, the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown the following Saturday and goes through sundown on Sunday while the actual day that marks His resurrection would begin Sunday at sundown, which would be the 17th of Nisan that year.

[5] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Friday, the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown on Saturday and goes through sundown on Sunday while the actual day that marks His resurrection would begin Monday at sundown, which is would be the 17th of Nisan that year.

[6] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Saturday , the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown on the following Saturday while the actual day that marks His resurrection would begin Tuesday at sundown, which would be the 17th of Nisan that year.

[7] If the 14th of Nisan (Passover) starts at sundown on a Sunday , the Feast of First Fruit would start at sundown on the following Saturday while the actual day that marks His resurrection would begin Wednesday at sundown, which would be the 17th of Nisan that year.

So HAPPY FIRST FRUITS today!!! I hope this helps!

All love,
Robin Main

NOTE: We do know from Hebrew History that some major events besides the ultimate event of the resurrection of Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) happened on the First Fruits (Bikkurim) too:

* On First Fruits, Noah’s Ark came up out of the waters of death and rested safely on Mount Ararat.

* On First Fruits, God’s people passed through the parted waters of the Red Sea, and safely came up on the other side.

* On First Fruits, Jews were saved from certain death in Persia, and Haman — the enemy of God and His people — was hung on His own gallows.

• On First Fruits, Yeshua was resurrected, conquering death forever!

P.S. I shared this earlier, but want to re-iterate. I love simplicity! When something appears to not be simple in Scripture, there is always a reason. I have asked Him many times why He made His Biblical calendar complicated at times, like starting a Biblical month by the new moon or a floating date for the Feast of First Fruits. What I hear every time is that He wants us to not lean on our own understanding, but to look to Him the Creator of all things, including the way that He sets the marks of time for man.
