Our Pattern Son – Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ) – has shown us The Way, The Truth, and the Life. The first three spring feasts of the Lord are not only rehearsals of our Messiah’s first coming, but also divine patterns for our own death, burial, and resurrection experience, so that we can become totally transformed into Christ’s image, as originally designed (Genesis 1:26-27).
Passover (Pesach) is about singing the deliverance song of Moses and the redemption song of the Lamb. The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world is worthy, worthy, worthy; because with His precious blood He purchased His own from every tribe, tongue, and nation: “ ‘Behold, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.’ And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth’ “ (Revelation 5:5-10 NKJV).
The Feast of First Fruits (Bikkurim) is about the transformation and resurrection of Messiah Yeshua on the third day, but it is also the pattern for His fully mature/maturing Body of Christ. The Messiah rose up on the last day, and so will those who strive to enter His rest to become an exact representation (John 6:35): “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:8-11 NKJV).
The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Hag HaMatzah) shows us a major key for our own transformation and resurrection, in which Enoch was a forerunner (Genesis 5:24). Unleavened Bread is a seven-day feast, which is an extension of Passover. In some ways, they are the same feast, because the most difficult part of preparing for Passover is the removal of all forms of leaven (sin) from our homes.
When the Passover story is recounted, the people recall that God’s set-apart people fled in haste, so they did not have time for their dough to raise. However, we need to understand that the Lord commanded the Israelites to keep the seven days of Unleavened Bread before the slaying of Egypt’s firstborn and before the they fled from Pharaoh, as articulated in Exodus 12: “ ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. …So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening” (Exodus 12:14-15, 17-18 NKJV)
Removing the leaven is significant to this corruption taking on incorruption, which God’s people will either miss or discount if they are not in touch with the Lord’s own Biblical Feasts (Leviticus 23:2). We need to come into alignment with His heart, as articulated in His Word. Leaven is a vast subject, which has sparked much discussion and analysis over the centuries. So, let’s take a simple and Biblical approach to it. Old leaven is any products that cause dough to rise in the natural. Leaven also causes a person to be arrogant and prideful. It can also be man-made doctrines. Yeshua uses leaven (yeast) as a metaphor for hypocrisy (Matthew 16:1-12). I personally like to generalize leaven as all sin that causes a person to be puffed up in any way.
The Apostle Paul includes Unleavened Bread in the rebuke to the morally lax Corinthian church: “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife! And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. … deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5-1-8 NKJV).
We can see from these three Feasts of the Lord that Passover symbolizes our personal salvation through Yeshua’s sacrifice on the Cross and the beginning of dying to the old leaven (i.e., self), Unleavened Bread represents a sanctification time of cleansing and purification that leads to the new reality – transformation into new leaven – and First Fruits represent our resurrection and transformation of this mortality taking on immortality, in which the loosing of the seven seals is critical body, soul, and spirit.
“So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, ‘The first man Adam became a living being.’ The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?’ The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:42-58 NKJV).
Enjoy the special grace of the Feast of Unleavened Bread where an especial portal is open to receive all your old leaven, as you confess and repent, as well as impart to you the eternal reality of the new leaven of this corruption taking on incorruption.
