TESHUVAH – ACRONYM FOR LOVE & LIFE

Did you know that teshuvah (תְּשׁובָה), which is the Hebrew word for repentance, is an acronym for love, life and truly living?

The Hebrew Sages teach us that the way of teshuvah can be summed up in five verses whose first letters form the word “teshuvah” – TAV – SHIN – VAV – BET – HEY:

[1] TAV – Tamim tiheyeh (תָּמִים תִּהְיֶה) – “Be wholehearted before God” (Deuteronomy 18:13).

[2] SHIN – Shiviti Adonai (שִׁוִּיתִי יְהוָה) – “I have set the LORD always before me” (Psalms 16:8).

[3] VAV – Va‘ahavta lere’akha (וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ) – “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).

[4] BET – Bekhol derakekha (בְּכָל־דְּרָכֶיךָ) – “In all your ways know Him” (Proverbs 3:6).

[5] HEY – Higid lekha (הִגִּיד לְךָ) – “Walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

Therefore, the act of repentance can be basically summed up by the two greatest commandments : “Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, ‘Which is the first commandment of all?’ Jesus answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these’” (Mark 12:28-31 NKJV).

Therefore, to return or to turn to God, a person must focus on setting the LORD always before you by being wholehearted before God, by acknowledging Him in all your ways, and by walking humbly with your God. This will then enable you to love your neighbor as yourself; and thus, you will be more than a conqueror. You will be operating in the world’s greatest power – love:

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39 NKJV).

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah is God’s spiritual child and has been fathered by God himself. And everyone who loves Father God loves his children as well. This is how we can be sure that we love the children of God: by having a passionate love for God and by obedience to His commands. True love for God means obeying His commands, and His commands don’t weigh us down as heavy burdens. You see, every child of God overcomes the world, for our faith is the victorious power that triumphs over the world. So who are the world conquerors, defeating its power? Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God” (1 John 5:1-3 TPT).
