HEALED FROM BACKSLIDING
Three steps forward. Two steps back. Does your life in God ever feel this way? Or even better yet, does it sometimes feel like your steps backward are even greater than your forward progress? I’ve been there. Done that. Bought that T-Shirt. Wore it out. Then bought it again and again and again… until the events in my life converged to being excruciatingly unacceptable.
In my anguish, I cried out to God, and He told me that I had to fully commit to Him and be healed from my backsliding. Say what? Be healed from my backsliding? That was a new concept for me. I hadn’t heard that one preached before:
“Your own wickedness will correct you, And YOUR BACKSLIDING WILL REBUKE YOU. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing That you have forsaken the LORD your God, And the fear of Me is not in you, ”Says the Lord GOD of hosts” (Jeremiah 2:19 NKJV)
“RETURN, YOU BACKSLIDING CHILDREN, AND I WILL HEAL YOUR BACKSLIDING. Indeed we do come to You, For You are the LORD our God” (Jeremiah 3:22 NKJV).
I had pretty much ran-the-gambit on the spectrum of backsliding from blatant sins to the not-so-obvious checking out in front of the TV. At the time, little did I realize that all my rebellious ways were, and are, considered evil in His sight. Now I know that my unending series of rebellion that kept the unholy trinity of Me, Myself, and I in charge of my life was a bitter thing. Scripture was right. My own sin (wickedness) corrected and rebuked me. I literally got sick of myself and my own ways.
By the time I came to the point of crying out in deep anguish because the cost of sin had become too great, I wanted only Him and His ways. When I confessed my sin of backsliding, rebellion and defiance and truly turned from my wicked ways, He was so good to me!!! I knew something dramatically changed inside of me where seeking His Kingdom and righteousness became the preeminent focus in my life (Matt 6:33).
One of the keys to my remaining healed from my backsliding was found in Jeremiah 2:19 “the fear of Me.” Sometime I will tell of my journey into the fear of the Lord, but for now just know: “So shall they fear The name of the LORD from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him. “The Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” Says the LORD” (Isaiah 59:19-20 NKJV).
If you find yourself fluctuating… If you are having a hard time not just running away into your cocoon of self-protection, this kingdom key may be just what the King has ordered for you. Give em heaven!!!
