Did you know that a temple stood in Jerusalem for over a thousand years? According to Scripture, King Solomon built the first temple in about 950 BCE, which was severely damaged by the Babylonians approximately 350-400 years later. It was rebuilt toward the end of the sixth century BCE by God’s people who returned from their exile in Babylon. Then it was rebuilt again by King Herod at the end of the first century BCE. This is the temple that existed when Yeshua (Jesus) walked the earth.
When Yeshua prophesied that not one stone of Herod’s Temple would be left standing (Mark 13:2), He prophesied its destruction by the Romans in 70 CE. Jesus did not oppose the temple itself, but what the temple had become. It obvious to the most casual observer that the world of God’s Temple in Jerusalem was the world of the first Christians. They expressed their faith with terms drawn almost exclusively from the temple.
Yeshua and His followers identified themselves as the true temple, just as there are a remnant that are part of the true temple today:
- “Having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a Holy Temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:20-22 NKJV).
- “And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people’” (1 Corinthians 6:16 NKJV).
- “If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward, If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are” (1 Corinthians 3:14-17 NKJV).
