A very prominent place that ONYX is featured in Scripture is on the shoulders of the High Priestly Garment, which signifies God’s Government (Isaiah 9:6-7). Exodus 28:9-10 explains that two onyx stones were fixed in settings of gold on the High Priest’s shoulders; one on the right, and one on the left. The names of the tribes of Israel were engraved upon these two stones, according to the instructions of the verse: “And you shall take two onyx stones, and engrave upon them the names of the children of Israel; there shall be six names on one stone, and six names on the second stone in the order of their birth.“
Some translations say that these shoulder strap onyx stones were sardonyx stones. Know that SARDONYX is a variety of chalcedony, and that there are many varieties of CHALCEDONY, but most of them are known under different names and are distinguished by their color. ONYX is the black version of chalcedony. Therefore, SARDONYX and ONYX can be the same stone. BTW – In Bible times, chalcedony was used extensively in the carving of seals, signet rings, etc. AND both SARDONYX and ONYX have been used to make beautiful cameos.
Therefore, ONYX to me signifies the government of God being on His Body’s Shoulder. There are two other possible applications of ONYX. One is on the High Priest Breastplate and the other is found in the foundation of the New Jerusalem… But I feel that they both fall under this very general definition of ONYX REPRESENTS HIS GOVERNMENT RESTING ON HIS SHOULDER.
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the GOVERNMENT WILL BE UPON HIS SHOULDER. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. OF THE INCREASE OF HIS GOVERNMENT and peace THERE WILL BE NO END, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV).
